All-Star Selections: Part III

Applying the same principles to our NL pitching staff that we did to the AL staff, we come up with the following “merit picks”

SP Dan Haren (ARI) – starter
SP Tim Lincecum (SFG)
SP Matt Cain (SFG)
SP Josh Johnson (FLA)
RP Rafael Soriano (ATL)
RP Nick Masset (CIN)
CL Ryan Franklin (STL)
CL Heath Bell (SDP)
CL Chad Cordero (CIN)

This
leaves us with two teams – Chicago and Pittsburgh – unrepresented.  For
the Cubs, Ryan Theriot is the #3-ranked shortstop, which gets him on
the roster.

The Pirates have two promising candidates in Freddy
Sanchez and Zach Duke.  Either would be a fine option – Sanchez is the
third-ranked second baseman and Duke the tenth-ranked starting pitcher
in my rankings.  I’m going to go with Sanchez.

This leaves me with four pitcher spots to fill, and three bench spots – two of them outfielders.  The two next-highest OFs are Phillie Shane Victorino and New York’s Carlos Beltran.   The infield slot is a lot harder to pick – Adrian Gonzalez is having another monster season, but Pablo Sandoval is only a fraction off of Mark Reynolds at third base.  Since the corner spots are power spots, and Gonzalez is hitting for more power, I’m going to give him the nod.

Yovani Gallardo, Chris Carpenter, and Javier Vazquez round out the starters, leaving me with a single slot to fill – a reliever.  It’s really hard for me to overlook Trevor Hoffman and his 0.94 WHIP, but the Giants have a pair of relievers in Jeremy Affeldt and Justin Miller who are having exceptional seasons, and I’m going to give the nod to Affeldt, who has a better adjusted VORP than either Hoffman or Miller.

“Trevor’s looking for you.  And he
does NOT look happy.”

That makes my NL squad:
